hey thanks for the help bookworm, unfortuntely im still encountering the sound problem. I installed the realtek AC'97 Audio Codec (that is for my Realtek Avance ALC650, right?), then i went back to the device manager and my Multimedia Audio Controller still wont recognise the codec - like when i press update and link it to the AC'97 folder it says "cannot install, windows cannot find the necessary software". Once again, any help is greatly appreciated!

Where are your radio jacks, at the top of the tower near mouse and keyboard or lower down the tower in an exspansion slot

Cheers

hmm there is 4 down the bottom colours (black, green, pick, blue, orange) and then there are another series above them, slightly larger as well, colours are pink, green, blue.

all are below the mouse and keyboard slots though

EDIT:

ill try be more specific:

the four smaller ones are located near the bottom of the tower below the port (thingy) for the monitor, the three main ones are located above the monitor port, kinda like in the middle of the tower, above them are some usb ports and then some expansion shots (i think) and then the mouse and keyboard ports.

EDIT 2:

I think i may have a sound card, a Creative SBLive! Gameport, as thats what comes up in the Belarc Report and when i go to the Sound, Video and Gameport thing in the device manger.

You do have a sound card, and that is the Sound Blaster, try useing them instead of the 3 higher ones, they are the default, Onboard sound must be Disabled in the BIOS and will not work

yeah that sounds about right, good thinking! but still it says no audio device and i cannot access the volume controls. Should I install a Sound Blaster driver or look to activate the onboard sound via the BIOS.

It's 2.15am here in the UK, work today, I'll get back, but try this, in Device Manager, right click the Sound Blaster and select Update,

Cheers

have a look at this
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected.Typically the problem will be that something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

Check from the dropdown arrow, do you have Realtek AC'97 and/or Sound Blaster, if you have Sound Blaster click to choose and see if sound works

Cheers
