the "crystal wdm audio codec" still reads a code 10 cannot start error

what gives ??

and thanks for running such a great forum!

Check this out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.
Just a small note, if it already set to Automatic then selecting Restart may solve it

if it's ok then update the Chipset then Restart your comp

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

i tried what you suggested ... it doesn't allow me to change any options in: Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback ... the menu is blank and says "no playback devices"

i tried the chipset update as well, although i had already done that as well ... any more suggestions ???

thanks soo much for your help!

Try this Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / Services - scroll down to Windows audio and check it is set to Automatic

Hope this helps

The only thing I can now think it can be is that sound is disabled in the BIOS, I've not checked Dell on how to enter BIOS, it takes a little digging to get this info from them. I'll have a look and get back, do you know which BIOS you have. One thing, they usually alter the BIOS so you can't change things.

Cheers

Check this out
I had the same issue; no sound; but drivers were there; everything looked fine. This stumped me for about a week. Okay; so this is how I fixed it. Go to "Start"-\"control Panal"-\"Administrative Tools"-\"Component Services". This will pull up a seperate window, on the left click "services (local)" from the tree. Go down to the "windows audio" service. If the service is on "disabled" or "manual"; right click and select "properties" under "startup type" change to "automatic"- click apply. click "start". Reboot

No it was on automatic , any other suggestions? do i have to take my computer in??

I don't know, it's not on my list, but if you change and anything is wrong you can always change it back. Set a Restore Point before you do just in case

Cheers

hey bookworm, i figured it out for NOW.

Reboot!!

Even though my status was on automatic, next to the startup Type column there is a column called status. For some reason my windows audio was on stop and not start.

thanks for telling me bout the component services

cheers

Help!

Hello there,

I recently put together a new desktop with pretty good specs. However, I am having audio problems like many other people. I am unable to install drivers for whatever reason, listing that they are not there (Object device not found.) The driver from the CD, enclosed with the motherboard, just straight up fails to install. Also, under device manager, there are only codecs listed. I did not buy a sound card because the audio on my motherboard is capable of 7.1 surround and is supposedly high quality. I intended to somewhere down the line though. Basically, I have no mixer or sound device, or at least...Windows isn't reading one. Thus, I am unable to install drivers since one is not available. I updated the chipset with the INF.exe listed on Intels site; although, I don't really think it pertains to audio. Im pretty young, but usually never have problems with desktops in any regard..So, Im kind of baffled. Need some help so I can play CS and WoW again with vent. Ill list the specs using a client:

Although it's not formatted that correctly, I hope you can find the information you need. Under Multimedia, I took note that no devices were detected for whatever reason. My BIOS is updated, and under peripheral devices in the BIOS setup, I have onboard audio along with front panel enabled. I disconnected my front panel, however. The pins to my LEXA front panel and motherboard header are somewhat cryptic. My speakers and such are plugged into the back panel audio connectors though. I tried mutiple SigmaTel downloads and none seem to work, even with the latest from Intels site. I just think my OS isn't reading the multimedia device for some reason...It is on-board / integrated audio. Anyway, that's about it for now..Im pretty clueless. Hope you guys can help!

Ok. it's enabled in BIOS, have you tried to use Device Manager to install the drivers. Load the motherboard disc, then close it, go to Device Manager, right click problem device, select Install and agree to installation disc, say no to Searching Online, then see if it finds drivers from the disc. That's the way I do it.

Also look at this Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / Services / scroll to Windows audio- should be set to Automatic

Hope this helps
