Help, please.......

I am having the same problem as many here. Unfortunately, I tried to remedy the situation myself and may have created an additional problem. Started out with no sound and now I'm getting something along the lines of "hardware detected - PCI multimedia Audio Device". When I follow the instructions for locating the software, windows is unable to find.....and still no sound. Anyway, hope you can help as you've helped so many others. Oh, don't know if this is related but when rebooting system, system restore loads but will not restore to an earlier time or create a restore point. This has been a problem long before the audio went out.

You weren't wrong there. Downloading that driver reminded me of the good ol' dial-up era

Anyway, thanks a lot for the help as everything is now working again

This is a little odd, an audio driver is not offered for Win ME for this model, the only one I can find on the site is if you are upgrading to Win XP, then it gives a driver for SiS 7018 audio

I am also onboard with NO Sound

Like the rest of this thread I too have battled my onboard sound drivers and have had nothing but trouble. Some days it works other days it doesn't. I have been guilty of downloading an alternative RealTek driver from cnet download because of my 5.1 digital dobly surround sound/logitech and RealTek has a way of making my motherboard driver sound incompetent even though stated it is best to stick with your driver that came with the install disk. Okay enough talking this is where I am at.
noticed my "beep" sound" had quit, a strange cpl.file with no name sits in my control panel, my directx diag test for directplay voice ends in an error telling me to basically do what you suggested a couple pages back and have the windows xp home cd handy in case it needs it but I too ran into my computer telling me I already had sp2 installed blah blah blah. So this this mapping command below is how I found you all.

I was in the process of uninstalling my AC97 realtek AC94 driver for the HD one released this weekend. But I am holding off until maybe this problem can finally be understood and fixed correctly. btw I have logitech headphones and a mic and it being USB works fine and from music to Skype phone that all works. Thanks for the direction! Followed the link and it didn't work due Windows ME but it prompted me to contact Sony Support. Completed about 12 steps that might solve the problem, restarted and wala!!!!!!!!!!! I have sound! Might have had something to do with leaving the application recovery cd in while restarting as I was getting a "PCI audio device found...please wait while windows locates the software." I had removed previously as instructed per the disc but forgot about it this time. Not sure if that was the answer but something worked. Thanks again for your time and efforts!!!!!

Still don't have System Restore though. Other than upgrading my lazy self to windows xp, any tips there?

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

These are the drivers from Asus for your board http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
click the Driver tab to se all drivers

it is Realtek AC'97, HD drivers would most likely not work, the version is older than the one at Realtek, I'm on 5790 at the moment, now Avance is usally for a Via board which you have, I would update the Chipset driver Via 4 in 1 on the site, then Restart the comp.

The Win problem could be helped by a Repair Install, this way you don't lose data, see here on how to http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hope this helps
