I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.

Hope this helps

nope this didnt work either, and i believed i checked to see if it was enabled weeks ago and if i recall it was. You check it by pressing F2 or F12 when windows is booting up right? B/c ive done that. =(

Well I've got an old problem but still one I can't crack.

I've just started a new job and I've been given a Shuttle system, but...no sound.

I went to Device Manager and saw a problem with the multimedia audio controller (yellow !).

Checking the old posts on this forum, I downloaded WDM_A395 from the realtek website (god that's slow!) and installed it. Lo and behold the problem was 'resolved' in device manager, but I'm still not getting any sound.

I'm running XP asnd the board is the FX41SKG.

Any ideas?

one thing in case you want to know is that when i run 'dxdiag', under sound tab i get
'Name: Conexant Audio
Device Id:RPboot/Audio
Manufacturer Id:1
Product ID:100
Type :WDM
Default Device:Yes'

Also in Control panels>sound and audio devices>audio i am getting default device as conexant..

I hope this isn't causing me any problem??Any ideas??

Your Asus A8N-E board has Realtek ALC850 go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

download the (Excutable file) save to desktop, double click to install

The site is slow

Set a system Restore Point before installing just in case

Hope this helps

Exclamation No volume control.

Well Ive been looking for a way to restore my volume control but I don't know how. It was working fine but now I don't have it anymore. It sometimes says I have no sound card installed. But the weird thing about it is I hear sound from like Real Player. I have a North Gate computer. I went on their website but they are no longer a company I guess. Please I need help fast. Thanks for listening.

Hi Bookworm, do you think that it would help if I installed my chipset driver(s)? It seemed to work for some other people in this post, maybe it would work for me?

Cheers

Check this out first, to see if Realtek is your default audio
once the driver was installed, went to control panel> sounds and audio devices> audio tab. in this window you can choose default audio playback and recording devices, but i did nothing for a while because i was thinking of hard ware. but when i opened the drop down boxes for playback and recording the driver was there so this part of the control panel must treat the driver as a device rather than the sound card. nb the setting it was on had it trying to use part of the 56kbps modem for sound why would this be? hope this helps others. Pete
Thanks to Peter22

Cheers

Thanks for listening.

Check this out first
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

get belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

copy and paste the report not the Software Section, see if it gives the motherboard

Hope this helps
