I'm another sad reformatting story. I clean off the HD and reinstall Windows and I get the following error through Media Player:

"There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000"

My media devices are listed as "Multimedia Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, USB Audio Device" in Belarc. So, I guess that means that that I have an intergrated soundcard.

More Belarc stats. I'm sure you're not sick of them yet.

Exclamation Sheer Desperation (Silent Vaio laptop!!!)

I have Windows Media Centre Edition 2005 with SP2 and recently lost sound from my Sony Vaio Laptop. I have read dozens of threads regarding this issue from numerous websites and followed all the advice, but nothing appears to be working.

The only possible explanation for this problem would have to be after I recovered my computer using the 'VAIO Recovery Tool'. However even this seems the unlikely cause, as the problem happened well after.

I have uninstalled two Devices (Bluetooth Audio and SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC' from the 'Sound, video and games controllers' in 'Device Manager' and beginning to think this has made the situation worse.

I also removed the ‘SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC’ from ‘Add or Remove Programs’ and when I restarted the laptop and followed the ‘Hardware Update Wizard’ I received a message saying that ‘ sthda.sys’ is missing and the update cannot continue.

Now not only have I got a Yellow exclamation mark (!) next to the following Devices...
Microsoft Kernal Acoustic Echo Canceller (I have two of these for some reason)
Microsoft Kernal Audio Splitter
Microsoft Kernal DLS Synthesizer
Microsoft Kernal GS Wavetable Synthesizer
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC

...I have now got the same symbol next to the 'RAS Async Adapter #3' under 'Network Adapters'.

I do not have to want to reboot my laptop, unless of course this is the only alternative.

Please could you help me, I can not bare any longer with a silent laptop.

You don't give the make and model of your VAIO, but you can get drivers from Sony, if an Intel chipset driver ( INF Software Instalation Utility ) install this and Restart our comp. Also the Sony Shared Library driver.
These are the chipset drivers that tell the OS which INF files to use

Then install your audio driver again

if not sure of your model get Belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

copy and paste the report, omit the software and win update section

Hope this helps

It's not giveing the motherboard, but are your audio plugs at the top of the tower near keyboard, mouse sockets on the I/O plate

Or much lower down the tower in an exspansion slot, the report shows a Creative SB sound card installed and onboard audio as well

Check this out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device. Does it show Soundblaste or nforce as audio

Get Everest copy and paste the My Computer/Summary section, see if it gives the board http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

Hope this helps
