Check this first
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.Soundmax is your audio driver

This is the link to your HP drivers
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...o duct=427905

audio is ADI Soundmax

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

Thanks for your answer but.

Hi,
I really appreciate for your answer.

First,
I tried to control panel sugesstion, but there was no down arrow, so I couldn't even select the down arrow.

And
I downloaded the driver that you linked, and installed, and rebooted, but the situation was not fixed.
(Actually the driver that you linked was the same thing that I tried to install yesterday, but it didn't work too.)

The wiered thing was, before upgrading Service Pack2, the sound worked.

Do you have any other ideas that I can try?

Thank you agian!

check this
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Cheers

I don't have a control panel called "Sound, video and game controllers".
Is it the same as "Sounds and Audio Devices" on control panel for the first step?

I already knew how to install the new driver, and even I tried to remove the driver and reinstalled, but DIDN'T WORK.

It makes me so exhausted.

I wonder, if I remove 'service pack 2', what will happen?
Because, before installing service pack 2, the sound worked. So, I wonder if I remove it, it would be back or now.

thanks thanks thanks!

I've found, somehow don't ask me how, that SP2 installation can turn off audio in the BIOS.

Press delete or F2 or whatever it is on your computer when it first starts up - go into the setup screen. Follow the legend and navigate to your audio options. They will be limited but concise. Make sure sound is ENABLED.

This is if you have onboard sound which, if you have a HP then you probly do.

Bleh, seems i'm having the same problem as the rest of these mates in the 52 pages of this thread. Reformatted my computer yesterday and installed Windows xp Media Center Edition 2005 back on. Soon realize that my sound isn't working.
My motherboard just fried 2 days ago, so i replaced that with a new Intel D945GCL board, so the sound is attached to the motherboard. Hmm, sound WAS working before reformat, after it never came back.
I tried installing the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC, hoping it would help..nope still no sound.

Anyhelp will be greatly appreciated =)
