I've had this problem twice already and I was able to resolve it before just by uninstalling/reinstalling the sound driver but that doesn't work anymore. I even tried to do a system restore but all of my restore points are not working. I don't know what to do anymore. I didn't install anything recently and I'm wondering why this happened to me again. I'm using Windows Media Player 11 and has a built in sound card. I have an ASUS Motherboard P5PE-VM. I hope someone can help me on this. Thanks.

4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.

Check this out and see if Realtek AC'97 is an option

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

If not go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install.

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

there are several drivers under AUDIO. I've already tried to download one of them (the one under WinXP) but it didn't work. What's the other one that I should download? Is it the one for WinXP64bit? Also, I live outside the US, which link should I click on whenever I'm downloading a file? What I did earlier was to click on Global. Does it make any difference if I use that or the other links? Thanks

I have downloaded the drivers for both WinXP and WinXP64bit but they didn't work. I even tried to uninstall the existing driver first before reinstalling it again but it still didn't fix it Whenever I check the device manager, it doesn't show any yellow exclamation points and everything seems to be properly installed but there's still no sound. Is there anything else that I can do to fix this?

Thank you for replying bookworm.

I have gone to Sound Playback and it says..."No Playback Device".
I don't know what is really going on with my computer so yea.

I have also downloaded the .exe file from realtek.com and found that it doesn't work for me. It just installs it and thats all.

Go back to Asus on the far right of the tab where board model is shown you will see Operating Statem - click down arrow and choose Win XP - 2 Siundmax drivers - download the v5.12.1.3665 and then install as follows.

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish

Checkto see if Soundmax is default audio
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

I've downloaded the other driver but there's still no sound. I checked my control panel and when I went to Sound And Audio Devices it says "No Audio Device". I've reseated my speaker connections and it still says the same thing.

The problem is not with the audio driver but with one of my system devices. My problem has been fixed now.

I'm sorry that didn't work because there is no drop down list for Sound Playback.

I have checked it countless times and nothing has happened.

Check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Start > OK Reboot.

Settings are already set to Automatic.
Tried also restarting the settings to see if that would work?
Is it a possible Malware?
I would think it highly unlikely, but maybe that could be the problem.
But it is most likely to be something with my system.
