yes, I'm using the same OS that had the Gigabyte. Now, what can I check to make sure my chipset drivers are working and I swear I dont remember seeing anything about the audio in my BIOS, but that could just be me being dumb.

well computers hate me.

When i first tried the thing with checking the 'modem line 0 placyback' it is set as the playing device but their are no other options to select.

the when i try and install the driver it says

"VIA AC97 Audio chipset is not enabled on this system!
Please enable it first on the BIOS then run this setup again."

idk why computers seem to hate me lol, but thanks for everything you have already done

You use the keyboard arrow keys to navigate the BIOS
As soon as the computer powers up Press the <DEL> key
The main Menue appears, click image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...in%20menue.JPG

use down arrow to go to Intergrated Peripherals - Press Enter this appears
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...eripherals.JPG

AC97 should be set to [Auto] if [Disabled] use the PgUp key to change to [Autu]

Then press the F10 key to Save & Exit

then install audio driver again

Yes, all of the above except perhaps, the chip set drivers. How can I work with that?

Can't access the Equus site, you need to have a valid email account, audio is shown as C-Media this is the site http://www.cmedia.com.tw/?q=en/driver

choose Onboard Audio - 4 shown with different drivers - it will be a case of trying the drivers in turn. I would download the drivers, put unzip each one in a folder and use the If No Setup File method to install

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Thanks for the reply. I tried all 4 drivers for XP and 4 for windows 2000 from the Cmedia website and still no sound. Just to retrace things, the computer came w/ windows 2000 installed. I got rid of windows 2000, installed window 98, and upgraded to XP home edition. I think when the sound was working only when windows 2000 was installed. I got the following message when I installed XP, hopefully it helps.

Oh, I was thinking that the computer just wasn’t designed to run w/ XP, but there is a sticker next the keyboard that says “Designed for Microsoft Windows XP”
