serge, this is a shot in the dark, but for Conexant Audio in the printout it says x 2. Now you have a Conexant date fax modem and drivers are available from the link
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

and download and install the driver for the modem, as I say it's a shot in the dark but they may be linked.Iv'e never come across this sound device before.

Cheers

Ok it says it's an AC'97 then try this from Realtek http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloa...&Software=True

Don't forget the Restore Point, this really is a shot in the dark.

Cheers

don't forget the Restore Point just in case

This driver is not one that I have linked you to, the Conexant No: is the same but this is both of the other drivers together and a later version.

Well I'm running out of ideas, all I can say is run through this, but I would not try updating the BIOS if I were you http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00035555

Now this is for desktop PC's but does have instructions foe checking if sound is enabled in the BIOS, all I will say that if you do go into the BIOS then write down everything you do then you can easily undo if something goes wrong, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...dlc=en&lang=en

Hope this helps

This is Compac list of drivers for your comp http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...c c=us&os=228

Audio is a Realtek AC'97, they have a more up to date driver here on their site, go here http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloa...&Software=True

Hope this helps
