I'm having this problem too, I PM'd bookworm earlier but to no reply, figured I'd post about in here too to see if anyone else (or she) can help me out.

I installed Belarc Advisor to find out what motherboard I have, and it came up with this

RS/RX480SB400

I don't really know what else to do, lol. If you could help me, it would be GREATLY appreciated. And if there's any more information about my system that you need from Belarc, just give me a shout, and I'll do the best I can. I'm a Music Tech student, so having no sound on my computer is a bit of a bummer, lol, as it's the main reason I got the new computer anyway.

Any help would be much appreciated, please get back to me as soon as you can. Thanks =]

It's not giving the make or model or the motherboard, do you know the make and model, if not sure then Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates. It may give clues

Check this out to see what is default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on
down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Also try this to see if it finds an audio driver

Update Installation

Logon as Administrator
Right click My Computer – choose Properties
Choose hardware Tab – click Device Manager
Expand Sound ,video and game controllers
Right click audio driver – Realtek, Creative etc
Choose Update driver
The Hardware Update Wizard appears
Windows Update – click No, not this time
Click Next
Choose Install from a list or specific location ( Advanced ) radio button
Click Next
The “Please wait while the wizard searches” window appears
If it find and installs the driver click Finish
Click Close

Question

No luck Sound drop down etc in Control Panel is all grayed out.
Device manager shows no Audio Device either I even have it showing hidden devices. Only thing under Sound in Device Manager is Codecs and the Legacy Drivers. Anything else you can think of?
Thanks

Check this out to see what is default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on
down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Also try this to see if it finds an audio driver

Update Installation

Logon as Administrator
Right click My Computer – choose Properties
Choose hardware Tab – click Device Manager
Expand Sound ,video and game controllers
Right click audio driver – Realtek, Creative etc
Choose Update driver
The Hardware Update Wizard appears
Windows Update – click No, not this time
Click Next
Choose Install from a list or specific location ( Advanced ) radio button
Click Next
The “Please wait while the wizard searches” window appears
If it find and installs the driver click Finish
Click Close

Check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

Question

Well that sounded promising, I never even thought of that. But as luck seems to be going, the service is running, not that I know how. I even cleaned the registry. Just a note UAA install seems to run without a problem. BUT it doesnt seem to actually install. Maybe a gremlin sneaked in my laptop and took the sound chip out.
