Sound Prob on Dell Precision 370

I have a no sound problem on my computer after reinstalling XP SP2. My integrated audio is not being detected and I can't seem to install drivers for it that work.

According to Dell's site I should be installing the SoundMax Integrated Audio driver so I downloaded that. It appears to install and then I'm asked to reboot. When I restart I get "No ADI codec is installed". Subsequently if I try to update drivers, specifying the location of the soundmax driver that was installed it gets about halfway (appears to be updating ksuser.dll I think) and then it fails with "The data is invalid".

Below is a snippet of my system summary taken from Everest with the relevant bits. Any help anyone can provide would be wonderful!

--------[ Summary ]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Service Pack Service Pack 2
DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)

Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4 530, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Motherboard Name Dell Precision WorkStation 370
Motherboard Chipset Intel Alderwood i925X
System Memory 1536 MB (DDR2-400 DDR2 SDRAM)
BIOS Type Phoenix (03/16/05)

Multimedia:
Audio Adapter Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-1]

Check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Thanks Barbara. I'm certain I attempted that before but just in case I hadn't I followed your instructions again. The chipset driver installs fine and then the audio driver seems to as well, but on reboot after the audio driver is iinstalled I get the same error "No ADI codec is installed" and my audio controller in device manager has a yellow !

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Darren

They are on the I/O plate.

FYI, I reinstalled windows a couple months ago from a clean format and that time the audio driver install brought back my sound. This time, I just reinstalled over the original install and replaced it. Might that have caused the problem?

I did it, everything is set up properly. The only audio I have is SigmaTel. Processes are also fine.

Could it be that my sound card broken? Or I have to get a message about it?

It is a very strange problem. I know.

You may have to check the BIOS, to see if audio is [Enabled] have posted a message on Dell forum to get specifics, Dell are a little vague, I'll post when I know more.

Try installing this way, note where the uncompressed files for Sigmatel are stored

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

you have to use the keyboard to enter all commands. make a note on paper of everything you do, if you need to exit the BIOS at any time use the Esc key

Check whether audio is enabled in the BIOS

As soon as you switch on the comp press the < Delete > the Main Menu opens http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...ain%20menu.JPG

use arrow key to go to Advanced Menu http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...ced%20Menu.JPG

use down arrow key - go to PCI Configuration - Press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...figuration.JPG

down arrow key to OnBoard PCI Devices Control - Press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0Control.J PG

check that Onboard AC'97 Audio Controller is set to [Enabled] or [Auto] if not use the + key to change

Press F10 to Save & Exit

say y

comp will then load Windows

Then install audio driver again

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
