NO Sound problem
Hi, my name is Gabrielle and I have just recently reformmated my computer due to various problems. Everything runs smoothly now but I have NO sound. Everytime I open windows media player and try to play something I get: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.
0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000
I don't know what happend. When I go into control panel and click sounds and audio devices I can not change any of the settings because the colors are like, dulled so when I try and click on anything nothing happens. It also says no audio device under the volume panel. I don't see what's wrong because I had sound before so I don't know what could have happend. I'm only 15 and I'm not really good with this system talk. Please help, thanks in advanced.

The first thing to do BUBBL3T3a is to reinstall your sound drivers. The best way is to go to the website of the company who makes your sound card and install them from there.
Let us know if this doesn't work

Hi Gabrielle,
Most likely you need to install drivers for your sound card. To confirm this, please check your device Manager (right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager) for unknown/improperly installed devices.
Please visit you computer manufacturer’s website, and download drivers along with the installation instructions.
Hope this helps!

I have tried everything. It says I have no sound card installed, but I know I do. I don't have the CDs to reinstall any sound related things and the manufacturer's site offers nothing that works with my computer. I downloaded the Belarc Advisor and under multimedia it says None Detected.
My system model is:
Compaq Presario 061 DW255A-ABA SR1020N NA510 0n41411RE101GIOVA10
System Serial Number: MXK4090ZYS
Main circut board is:
Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD Gamila/Giovani/Neon series 030
Serial Number: 4110039827
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.06 12/31/2003
I dunno, I'm thinking that will give youa better picture of what I'm dealing with. Either way it's really irritating me because last time I reformatted somehow I got by sound back and I didn't need any CDs(But I might have downloaded something) or anything so I'm guessing I have some setting on my computer that is not set right. I don't know how I did it. I just clicked around and then like 2 weeks later I went into WMP and the music played. I tried clicking around but nothing happend. Well anyways, if you can help, please do and if you already have thank you so much for your time!
PS-Also, when I go into device manager under Other Devices my Multimedia Audio Control has a yellow question mark and a yellow exclamation point next to it. I'm guessing that means something?

Open your computer, remove and replace the sound card (if it's removable) and reboot. Does windows detect your card?

Well, a search for sound problems in XP will produce more results than you can sift through in a lifetime
Your soundcard is the card inside the computer case, into which you plug your speaker cable.
If it is "built-in" to the motherboard, then it can't be removed. However, it it is in one of the "slots", it is removable.
If XP doesn't know it's there (from what you said above) it may not be inserted correctly. Removing and replacing it (in another free slot), hopefully, will let windows see it and the software will then be installed.
If it is built in, you will need to install the drivers for it (though we'll have to identify it first).

Do you have any CDs that came with your computer (i.e., Motherboard, Drivers, Support etc)?
Go here:
www.belarc.com
and download Belarc Advisor.
Install and run the program and tell us what it lists under 1. Main Circuit Board/Board: and 2. Multimedia
