Exclamation Computer CRASHED---PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok my computer crashed and I found a thread on here that described how I could go about reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling XP---basically give me a fresh start---ONE MAJOR PROBLEM---I did this and since my version of XP was an upgrade it is asking me for a previous version of Windows so it can confirm that I can use the upgrade disk. Am I basically just screwed as I no longer have my Win98 disk---will I iever be able to get this computer working again and have any chance of getting my data back??? Any help you can provide in this regard would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, you DO need a Windows 98 (or almost any other MS OS – if I am not mistaking: 98, ME NT4) disk to successfully install XP from the Upgrade disk. Can’t you just borrow it?

I figured that I was going to get that answer---problem is that I have asked everyone I know and nobody has a copy of an older Windows version disk.

Boot

You dont need full verion of windows...you can install clean version using upgrade only..... What you need is a windows 98 boot disk on floppy... Try kazaa or astalavista.box.sk .

Also try typing "windows boot files" as a google search

Astalavista sounds really cool, but XP Upgrade asks to (briefly) insert Windows 98 or other MS OS CD to check for eligibility.
How do you get around it with a Windows 98 boot disk?

The files Xp needs for an upgrade are probably only the ones found on the boot disk.

When a program is only an upgrade, it is trying to establish that you are at least running some version of them same program, all xp needs to see are same files..usually only command.com.... fdisk... and other basic system files to confirm that you have an old copy.. so when xp askes for 98 or other ms os disk then "browse" to your floppy.

All the files that your pc needs to run Xp are their, its just a security issue.
Try this link www.geek.com/news/geeknews/ 2001oct/bma20011002008128.htm

I know it can be done, its an interesting learning curve.

Good luck..
