I have had the same experience; on 3 windows XP Pro.
Autoupdate at 3am and auto install. Each of 3 computers stuffed up the same way.
I log onto windows xp, it starts up then when it loads in the background picture it.....
Explorer crash, no icons nor taskbar.
fixed by: Alt ctr del ..... run a new task.... C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe
this will open up system restore.... take computer back (Restore) before the crazy MS auto updates....
Needless to say that i turned auto update off on all Windows xp computers i have.
This fixed all 3 computers... but now i'm stuck like faith.... to know what interaction or update made so much of a headache....
