Mystery! Why can cd drive read only one disk without being rebooted

Operating particulars: WinXP Pro 2600 SP2. DVD/CD R/W Sony Combo Drive DRU 510A, ram 358m, hd 80g. Device Manager shows no problems, and drive, controllers and adapters all working properly.

Problem - cd will read if it is in drive at bootup If there was no disk in drive at bootup the first disk inserted since bootup it will be read. In either case once read no other disk will be read, and is the only one that will appear in anyone of four different file browsers I have tried (windows explorer, 2xexplorer, My Computer, and a Commander type browser) and will continue to appear there even if the disk is removed. No other disk inserted will appear in the browsers. Somehow the first disk between boots gets read into memory and cannot be displaced. I have done all the things that my research could suggest, including checking the autorun condition both in the drive properties and in the registry. checking the DMA, and of course checking all the connections. I have uninstalled each of the browsers leaving only one of them in turn. I have removed and reinstalled the Sony drive. Nothing changes. I am at my wits end - can any of you good people help?

This is possibly something to do with any software you installed that pertains to the optical drive. Certain apps were known to cause problems.
If your burning software uses a "virtual drive", it may be the drive letter it has allocated, or the actual feature itself that causes a problem. You should be able to disable said feature from the software.

Something that could also maybe cause it would be the windows cd burning service "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service".

You need Admin rights for what follows.
If confident, go to control panel/administrative tools/services. find the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and double click it. In the centre of the window that opens, you see a drop box with startup type next to it. Click the selector on the right of the box and highlight "disabled".

You return to the window. Click apply. If the service status shows running, click stop, then ok. If it isn't running, just click OK.

Note that doing this prevents windows from using it's inbuilt burning features. If you use Nero or similar, then it's no loss to you.

Reboot for good measure and see what happens.

Note that sometimes uninstalled software will leave conflicting drivers behind.

Anyway, Check your cd software and report back.
