Commit charge (memory usage) is increasing but not decreasing

Hello.

I have a problem that memory usage is increasing too fast.

When I reboot the machine, the memory usage that time is 160MB and that's strange. I use 256MB DRR ram.

For example. I restart computer... run a couple of programs and look at task manager, which shows that usage is high (cca. 200MB). I close EVERY application, but ram usage is still in the same high.

My configuration:

Intel P4
256MB DDR
Matsonic mainboard
40GB IBM disk

I used this XP on my old computer (celeron 433mhz) and it worked fine!

What to do? I've tried all antiviruses, I've defragmented the disk...

nothin' helps

any clues?

When you close every program, and then look at the number of processess on the bottom left of Task Manager, how many are there?

With JUST XP running the number should be between 16-18.
And take up about 70-80 MB's of RAM.
If there are more, you do not have every program turned off.

Yep, I did that already. The memory usage is 160MB and about 20 processes are running.

I sorted them by memory usage. I added up all numbers (in my mind) and I got about 40MB, which don't make 160! Yes, I know that computer WITH NO processes uses a couple of MB's of memory... but this.

Er, I have another question here.

This XP I've had installed on my old disk before, so I used norton ghost to clone the partition.
After a couple of days I started to see that my old is kinda of strange. It become broken.

Is it possbile that the data on that disk were broken and I copied broken data, so now I use "broken" XP?

Would full reainstall help?

XP can have problems with any partitions that are not made by XP.

I have seen quit a few issues with Norton Ghost.

Turn every Startup item and 3rd prty service off and then reboot and then see were you usuage is.

Start/Run/mscofig/Services tab 'check the box called Hide all Microsoft Services/uncheck whatever is left on the list/Startup tab then hit disable all/Apply/Close/Restart.........then hit OK then Cancel

Then check the usuage, if it is not under 100 then ya it could be a busted XP.

Let me know.

Ok, I'm here. I just did what you've said.

The usage is 80MB. What does that mean? What should I do, to keep ram usage on a normal level?

I count on you

OK 80 is normal for XP with just itself running.

It looks like somethingthat you disabled under Services or Startup is eating up your RAM.

Turn a few items on at a time and see if you can narrow down which on is causing the issue.

but anyway. I shouldn't eat so much ram. It's annoying. I hate this

I think, I'll do a full dos format.

Look, I'm running just a couple of SMALL processes, but computer uses so much ram anyway. This just doesn't make any sense to me.

I think the problem was the old disk. Data on this disk is probably broken.
