Unhappy Cannot Bootup due to chkdsk!!

Can anyone help me with this? I have windows xp pro, sp1. I ran chkdsk, and it said it would run the next time it restarts. I restarted the computer, and chkdsk ran. After it completed it rebooted the computer, and started to run again! This time it just started and then promptly stopped, saying that it has finished checking the disk. The problem is, it just stays at the chkdsk screen. It doesn't boot, or anything... dead in the water. I rebooted, and it starts the same loop over and over again!!!!! I've tried booting in safemode and last known good configuration. Nothing. I can't get to a logon screen. It always starts chkdsk, then after it finishes, it hangs... Is there anyway to stop chkdsk from running at startup?? I would have to disable it through the recovery console if possible. Any help is appreciated!!!!!

Boot into the Recovery Console and run the CHKDSK from there, let it finish and see if you can get in then.

CHKDSK /R is what you want to type in at the command prompt.

The chkdsk service that is running may be autochk.exe.

Typing this may stop the chkdsk servcice
net stop autochk.exe

If that does not work try the article.

It basically puts in an older registry so you can boot the computer, and then take a regestry out of a recent restore point.

GOOD LUCK, let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the tip. I actually ran the chkdsk /R command. It ran fine, but I still had the same problem.

I am going to try what you said. I hope it works. I'll let you know!

Well, I tried your suggestions. The net stop autochk.exe command did not work. It didn't recognize the command. I then tried the windows registry change, but got about halfway through the instructions, at which point it tells me to exit the recovery console and then windows xp should reboot. Now I don't get the chkdsk screen, but my screen hangs just after the windows xp boot screen. My screen just turns black and hangs....

I'm killing myself for not having backed up my data....
