SP2 Causes Keyboard to not Function

When I install SP2 and restart the computer, the keyboard no longer works. Complete loss of function. When I restore back to before SP2, the keyboard works again.

Here's a list of what I've tried to fix this:
-Update keyboard driver. Even though it was just a stock Compaq keyboard, I figured I'd try to find a driver for it. Turns out Compaq/HP no longer supports the keyboard because it's so old (4 years).

-Update BIOS. However, BIOS has been updated as of May last year and a new update hadn't been released for my board since then.

-Install new, more modern aftermarket keyboard that comes with its own driver. I really thought this would work, but still no joy. Same problem persists.

-Swap from USB to PS2 port. Again, no joy.

-Re-install SP2 4 times just for kicks and grins. No such luck.

It's almost like the USB and PS2 ports are being disabled once SP2 installs. Talk about friggin' annoying. And the big problem is that Windows won't let me install Office 2003 because of an "incomplete update", and I need those programs for work purposes.

System Specs:
-Windows XP Pro (legit copy)
-AMD Athlon XP2100+ processor
-512 MB DDRAM
-Motherboard is from Biostar. More mobo specs available if necessary...don't really know what's pertinent w/the mobo.

Any ideas besides what I've already tried are greatly appreciated.

Darth - Have you checked the pins on your KB connector? I had the same kind of problem once; turned out it was a bent pin & two pins trying to plug into one hole. Straightening out the pins fixed the problem.

Go to Compaq/HP site, and find specific SP2 requirements for your system.
General SP2 installation stuff is here:

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Good Luck!

If this was the problem I would be experiencing issues regardless of SP2. Everything's kosher physically.

I've been all over Compaq's site and also called up customer support. There's absolutely nothing wrong with anything that I have. And now that I have a new keyboard, Compaq is out of the picture entirely. The only thing "Compaq" about my computer now is the original harddrive and 3.5" floppy drive. Everything else is aftermarket.

My XP Pro is an installation over the original WinME that was factory installed on the original harddrive, and I deleted ME afterward entirely.

Compaq is not the problem. I'm afraid that my mobo may be.... . I need technical confirmation before I try anything expensive and time consuming...like replace the mobo.
