Thumbs down What can be done if Internet Explorer is screwed?

I am on Internet Explorer 6. It behaves like screwed up, recently.
For example:
1. It constantly gives the famous stupid “The program executed an illegal operation…” error message and tries to close all opened Internet Explorer windows.
2. When trying to “open link in a new window” IE gets stuck and hangs my entire computer.
3. Trying to preview my website that I make in a website editing program through Internet Explorer results in my program and entire computer hanged.
In one word my Internet Explorer 6 is screwed for good but I don’t want to switch to other Internet browser for web designing reasons. Is there a way to fix Internet Explorer standalone or to somehow restore it to working state? Some fixes possible? Is it possible to diagnose if everything is ok with Microsoft Internet Explorer?
Thank you.

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer and install it. It should repair its self. Also run check disk and do a defrag. Go ahead and run a registry check in case of bad or broken entries. Then go to M$.com and get all windows updates if any. Hope this helps.

Anytime Internet Explorer starts acting squirrely, the usual suspect is spyware.

First, go to this page and download WinsockXPFix. You may not need it but if you do, you won't be able to get online to get it. Remember where you saved it.

Then, if you haven't already, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or Ad-Aware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found. Don't skip the update step, it's important!

If after removing spyware you find you can't get online (rare but possible), run the WinsockXPFix you downloaded.

Please post back with the results.

My apologies. I was unaware I was stepping on your toes by posting in this thread. I assumed that all help is welcomed. My mistake.
