windows xp network connections problem

The problem scenario is like this, the main terminal runs windows xp professional and the other is windows 98. Both computers are connected to a router with the same workgroup. I tried to ping the windows 98 ip address and runs ok. I also ping the routers gateway and also runs ok. My problem is in windows xp. I
tried to ping the ip address from the main terminal and it's giving a time-out error. Both computers are recognize by the router. I ping the localhost from
the main terminal and runs ok. I tried the main terminal to a cable line and I can
access the internet. My only problem is the network connections between the main terminal and the windows 98 terminal. I also tried to disable any firewall.
Does anybody encounter this problem? It's very strange to me. It didn't happen in windows 2000. Any suggestions to this problem? Thanks!!!

Did you make a network disk on you XP box? Set up the workgroup on XP and create the floppy when it ask. Then use that to set up win98 box. Now for the other problem that you have, did you use the same cable? If so try a different cable. Next try a different port on the router. Double check your router settings and see if the router can see you computers IP/MAC address. Reset the router and see if that helps.

ping problem in windows xp

Thanks for your advise. You know what, I finally found the ping problem. You cannot just disable the firewall from norton. the solution is to uninstall the Norton Internet security.

WOW! That's way too drastic. How do you protect your box now?
Any firewall can be configured …

Operation with local area networks

After installation, Norton Internet Security blocks all
file and print sharing on your computer. Use the Home
Networking feature to specify the computers that can
access your computer for file sharing and other
services. This lets you safely permit access to trusted
computers without compromising your protection.

To change your Home Networking settings
1. Double-click Personal Firewall.
2. Click the Home Networking tab.
3. Click Add.
4. Follow the on-screen directions.

You can also use the Home Networking Wizard to
quickly configure Norton Internet Security for your
network.

Adding client computers to the Trusted Zone in Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall.

All the Best!
