Internet Explorer Won't Connect... ?
I'm at my end on this problem, so I'm going to try and describe the problem as specifically as possible. One thing I can't be sure on is when this problem started... perhaps a couple of months ago, but I do know I can't identify any program installations or uninstallations that correlate.
So here it is...
I can't get Internet Explorer to connect to the internet. I run Windows XP with SP2. I've got a cable modem and it is functional. Currently I use Firefox web browser, and it can connect and surf just fine. I did have FF and IE working at once, so I don't believe it is a direct conflict with FF.
Curiously I can't get MSN Messenger to work either. Other programs prevented from a web connection are Windows Update, AVG anti-virus, and various spyware detection programs that need to connect to update - except they can't.
AOL DOES connect. As does Kazaa. Funny enough, AOL's IE browser works okay.
So basically I can get Firefox, Kazaa and AOL to establish working connections. Internet Explorer, AVG, MSN Messenger, and others cannot.
None of these programs are new as all worked before the problem began. I have tried numerous fixes.. including emptying caches, cookies, temp files, defrags and reg edits, re-installing the network adapter and installing SP2... none have worked.
One last piece of info involved a network diagnostic. The system tells me that my network adapter ethernet connection fails to gain a connection... I am not sure what it means or how to go about fixing it.
As for Internet Explorer.. when trying to gain a connection, it seeks a couple of ISP numbers (xxx.xx.xxx.xx etc) until it times out.
So that's about it... if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.
