issue: drive letter and windows xp install

Hey there,

I am to receive a bunch of computer parts the upcoming week, and I want to have everything right from the start.

There will be 3 harddrives installed, 1 Sata + 2 IDE.
The SATA should be used for windows install, and the 2 IDE drives for storage.

My question goes to, if the IDE drives are registered under windows install 'first' and they are assigned to C:\ and D:\ and the SATA as E:\ I would have to install Windows to E: and I have had this once, by mistake - and this was very annoying. Windows is to be installed on C:\.

So of solutions, the only one I see is waiting with the install of the IDE drives, leaving the SATA being the only drive. But then when the IDE drives are installed, the dvd writer and cdrom will have drive letters 'before' the IDE drives - which is also somewhat annoying.

Also, is there a solution for using cdrom instead of floppy - installing RAID driver during windows setup?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Mads

When you add drives to your computer, such as an extra hard drive, a CD drive, or a storage device that corresponds to a drive, Windows automatically assigns letters to the drives. However, this assignment might not suit your system; for example, you might have mapped a network drive to the same letter that Windows assigns to a new drive. When you want to change drive letters, follow these steps:

Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you’ll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are listed at the bottom of the pane.
Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK.
You will not be able to change the boot or system drive letter in this manner. Many MS-DOS-based and Windows-based programs make references to a specific drive letter (for example, environment variables). If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not function correctly.

Simply have the ONLY drive installed be the SATA drive. It will then be C:.
Install XP - then add the other drives later. Once you have the IDEs and the CD ROMs, you can change the drive letters around as you like.
