Unhappy Recovery Counsel Not Working

A friend brought her computer to me because it kept rebooting. So I stopped it from rebooting and came up with the error code: 0x00000024 with instructions to run chkdsk

The computer is an HP pavilion 514c. Its running XP (not sure which version, it has no COA on it and all I see in Windows XP before it craps out).

I pressed F10 to go into the recovery drive and it starts and then it just hangs. So I put in an XP disk and pressed R to go into the recovery counsel and it also hangs with the following message at the bottom: Examining 76317 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi...

Any suggestions would be great! I hope I have provided enough information.

Thanks!

Did you run chkdsk? Open a command prompt type in chkdsk /f/r
This is what the bsod code meant:

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Sorry for the late reply. And thanks for the response. I used the disk and tried to get to the chkdsk but after pressing R it just was hanging. Anyhow I found a new program that I was able to boot from a disk and it let me run chkdsk from there and problem was solved. The program was Acive@boot disk. Thanks for the help!
