XP Home edition boots to blank screen

Help,
I am running XP home version. Everything was working fine for months. Now, when I turn on the machine it goes through the post, I seen the XP Logo screen loading and then instead of seeing the logon screen i see a black screen with my mouse pointer. I can move the mouse pointer around. It stays at this black screen with only the mouse pointer. Any ideals?? please help, I do not want to use the restore cd that came with the machine if I do not have to.

no, nothing except a mouse pointer. When I boot into safe mode, I see safe mode in the four corners of the screen in white. the rest of the screen is black. I have the mouse pointer that I can move around.

Maybe your graphic's card or monitor went south... Do you have another monitor to try?

I know its been a while since you had this problem, but my 10 year old has this problem. Did you resolve the problem and if so, how?

Computer stops responding with a black screen when you start Windows XP

There are a few things you could try for this, it seems like XP has files missing so it cant boot. You could try booting to comand prompt, (hold F8 when machine is at POST stage and select safe mode with command prompt) once there type, format MBR and hit enter. This rewrites the boot records and can some times solve little hic-ups with booting.
If that fails you could boot from the XP disc and do a repair installation. This will keep all ur data in tact. When u boot of the disc, i think u press "R" on the options, u will see it though.

loginui.exe is missing, that's the problem. Re-installing Windows will fix this problem.
