Screen looks like Microwave intereference

Help. I have a presario 2190 laptop running Windows XP pro. The screen is malfunctioning. It starts looiking as if someone was operating a microwave nearby and it gets horizontal lines across the screen, it splits in half, then in four and so on until you can no longer see anything on the screen. Eventually, the screen turns blue, white or greenish mesh of color.

I reinstalled the recovery disks and this helped for a little while. But, it came back. When I start up, I can see the the start up sequences fine until it gets to the XP logo, then it starts acting up.

Is this a virus? a bad video card? drivers? Help.

My guess is bad drivers. Try using an external monitor to access your laptop.

If it were the screen there would be permenant damage noticable at all times, not just half way into loading windows.

Also make sure no electronic devices are near your laptop, sometimes speakers and or magnetic devices cause this interferance, my monitor used to tweak out when my cell phone rang and was to close to the screen.

How do I use an external monitor? just plug it in to the port?

And, the description you gave of the cell phone interference, it is something like that but very severe. And, I do not have any eletrical devises near the laptop. It happens even in my car, at the office etc.

Thanks.

My guess is also bad drivers seeing as it only happens on the windows logo, probably when it tries to load the drivers. Try to download the newest drivers from the card manufacuter's site.
Second issue:

To use an external monitor, plug it into the port, and then you have to press a combintion of keys, usually the "fn" key + a function key at the top. i.e. F5.
Generally the key you have to press has a small monitor drawn on it in a different color. This will toggle the display, from the laptops screen to the external monitor.
