winlogon.exe - Application Error

When I boot up to windows I get a error:


winlogon.exe - Application Error


The instuction at "0x...." referenced memory at "0x....". The memory
could not be "read".


Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program


Now i can log in and ignore the window. But if I click on OK or CANCEL
the machine reboots. I have scanned for all spyware and nothing. I
have scanned for all viruses and nothing. I have also gone into Safe
Mode and run a CHKDSK /r and still nothing. I am pullign out my
hair... PLEASE HELP!

Oh and I did a system restore and tried to replace the winlogon.exe in the system32 dir with a ntfs bootdisk.

when you log on safe mode what user account you log on at that moment?
do you have windows XP CD?

Hi,

I am having exactly the same problem. These are steps I have tried:

1) F-Secure virus & spy scan
2) Search & Destroy scan
3) Windows defender scan
4) Advanced registry doctor professional scan
5) Repair XP using the XP CD. This wrked for 2 days, then the error came back
6) Tried re-installing service pack 2 (as above) but I get access is denied error message after it finishes analysing my pc

....after getting access is denied while trying to re-install sp2, I went on to Mocrosoft's website and it told me it was to do with registry permissions and I needed to edit the reg keys etc..

..before I do that, is there ANYONE out there who knows an easier way to solve this winlogon application error?

Not sure, I haven't checked. I'm at work and will need to check it when I get home.

If you can boot in safe mode, you could disable the system restore and run McAfee AVERT Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/. This would allow you to detect if your computer may have been infected by a virus.

I just scanned using that stinger program and it found nothing. Any other ideas?

if you can boot into safe mode then you're definitely a recoverable scenario. I highly recommend a little program called HijackThis v1.9 (whatever is most recent). Download.com it doesn't need to be installed, and on starting it you want to choose do a system scan and save the log. Posting the log info will help dramatically. This gives a description of everything running on your pc and what's attached to critical components like winlogon. Now if you can get into windows normally this is the better place to run the hijackThis log as in safemode you load different registry settings than normal mode. On a quick note, winlogon is very very often attacked by/attached to by viruses and spyware as it is garaunteed to always be a running program on any windows pc. And on a similar topic, many viruses and spyware now are smart enough to infect/attach to the system restore directory backups that XP does on a regular basis. This is where a bootrom like MiniPE/BartPE really comes in handy as you can load into a stable environment and access your registry files as well as registry backups quite easily.

If you have the windows xp cd you can go through the boot up options do a "Repair on windows XP Home Edition". this will then delete all the core system files and then re-install them.

after that you would have to do some updates and some programs might be missing files.If you just reinstall the programs they should be fine.

Hi,

If you look further up at the list of things I have already tried, repairing windows is on the list. It worked for 2 days then I started getting the message again.

However, forthe last day, all of a sudden the message has stopped appearing. I hope this is for good as it was so damn annoying. Not sure what fixed it but its gone.
