possible Windows Update issue

Few months earlier I installed XP Pro (without SP1) on one of my older systems, everything's been working fine until one day I went on to windows update to try to update windows. I installed all the security updates (not SP1 or SP2) everything seems to be working fine until computer freezes randomly. Keyboard, mouse, nothing works. I tried formatting computer and reinstalling, everything works fine until i go to windows update and the same problem comes back. I can be doing nothing at all and my computer just freezes. My conclusion is that one of the updates is probably causing the problem. Has anyone encountered this problem before?

System info:
AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz
nvidia geforce 2 MX 400

I'm guessing there are some files in SP1 + 2 that you require.

I would suggest you put sp1 and 2 on because as of April 12 (I think thats the date) Microsoft will be forcing XP users to load sp2 regardless.

If you're not running SP1 or SP2, then you need to update NOW!

There are very many updates that are only available to computers with Service Pack 1 or 2.

If you haven't downloaded the service packs because you have a dial-up connection, you should be able to find a free Service Pack 2 CD at a local computer store, or you can order it from Microsoft at no cost (not even shipping).

To try to help your current problem, put your XP CD into the CD-ROM drive and then go to Start->Run and type in cmd. In the command windows that appears, type in sfc /scannow. This will cause the system to compare the system files that are on the hard drive to those that are on the original install CD. It will then replace any files that may have become corrupt.

Hope this helps.
