Try shutting down the computer by typing shutodown -s -t 1 in the Run window (to keep you from "abusing" the power on/off button) . As for you shared folder, your data is not lost it's just inaccesible, thanks to the incredible reliability of Microsoft's Service Pack 2. I, for one, haven't installed SP2 "just yet" because of the incredible amount of bugs which need to be fixed in it and esspecially the bad interaction with other software (e.g. Norton AntiVirus). I urge you to uninstall SP2. Alltough that might not solve the problems you have now it will surely save you from having to deal with new ones. If uninstalling SP2 doesn't do the trick try repairing you windows installation through the setup recovery console or restoring an older (good) configuration using System Restore. Hope this helps.
Good Luck
