Exclamation Help with installing an operating system!!!!

Ok, heres the deal, I have a HP computer and was trying to install windows ME (from the computers back up disk) on the origional hard drive(which was wiped) and it said that there was a problem with the disk- and it said that i could perform an f-disk- but with caution. so i had 3 other hard drives and tried each of them-same thing every time. atleast two of the three hard drives i knew for a fact worked and none of them worked- please help if possible!!!!Thanks.

you will have to format the hard drive with FAT32 file system before WinMe can be installed. FDISK is a utitlity that can create, delete or format hard drive partitions. either make a bootable floppy and put the FDISK utility on it, or just use a WinMe boot disk which are already setup with FDISK.

you can download a WinMe boot disk from here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

using FDISK will completely wipe any data stored on the hard disk but as you say uv already wiped it, this shouldnt be a problem for you.

the link below will guide through using FDISK:
http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/fdisk/fdisk1.htm

EDIT: you say this is a "backup disk", are you sure this disk has the full WinMe OS on it?

I highly suggest not using windows ME at all. The os was put out by microsoft too quickly and has too many security faults and in my experience is unstable. However just so you know the FDisk utility is ok to use. try putting in a windows 98 bootdisk, use the fdisk command, delete all active partitions and drives. Then create a primary partition, then reboot. Boot back to the 98 boot disk. Format the c: drive. reboot this time using cd-rom support. run the ME setup and it should work. Have you tried XP or 98SE instead, much better reliability.
