network problems?

hi i carnt seem to be able to get my network working basicaly i have set up 2 pcs slapped a networkcable between then and then run the network wizard thingy both computers can now see each other i.e. if i go threw entire network the other is listed there but if i click on it it says i dont have the privledges and then i hough what about sharing the c drive on both (this is the disk they boot off though?) and i carnt map it as a network drive eventhough i have given it a different name to the normal can anyone help?

If they are both Windows XP machines, I would go back and run the system restore wizard to undo the harm that the Microsoft network setup "wizard" did to both of your computers.

As I understand it . . . you are directly connecting the computers together through their network interface cards? No switch?

If that is the case . . . you need a crossover cable. A regular patch cable is not going to work. Then, all that you have to do is assign each NIC a static IP address:

Machine 1:

IP Address 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1

Machine 2:

IP Address 192.168.1.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.2

Then, they should be talkin!
