Probably a silly question regarding XP logon screen

Greetings.

My question probably has a simple answer, i just dont know it.

I have Windows XP home edition on my laptop with Macafee virus software. The only firewall is the one in my Netgear wireless router.

My question:

At the log on screen where each user has an icon, the icon for my account shows an unread email. This notice shows up right about where one would see how many programs are running. The email account the notice refers to is a complimentary Earthlink account that i do not use. In fact there is no email in that account. After recieving the notice i logged into the account and deleted the spam. Upon reboots the notice about unread email in that account is still there, even no email is.

How can i stop XP from even showing me email noticies in that manner to begin with, much less removing that notice about an email that isnt present?

Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Send a message via MSN to snowmonkey
Yes we are here,, where ever here might be
That notification perhaps belongs to your hot mail account not your earthlink,, have you had Hot mail account ? or better yet have you ever used an email account for your MSN passport ? that account has email in it.... if you don't use that email account then why don't you remove it ?

cheers

Well, the notification on the log on screen specifically says that i have an email at **********@earthlink.net.

I havent had a hotmail account in active use for 5 years and have never used a MSN passport account.

Lightbulb Much Easier!

You will be pleased to know that i have found you a much easier way of removing this annoying information from your welcome screen. It will however only work for your screen name unless you log on as everyone else on your PC and follow the same instructions. Please visit the following website for information on how to disable the Unread Mail message from the welcome screen. I can confirm that this works, because i have tried it myself. REQUESTED REG EDIT . Hope this helps.

<as with all reg-edits make sure you always back-up your registry first unless you know what you are doing. The above link provides information which i certify to be correct and working, if at any time you need help with this reg-edit do not hesitate to EMAIL ME . Thanks!> To open regedit click: Start>Run and type regedit and click OK

Unfortunately it did NOT work for me. That tip uses the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\... path. It might work if you already have a MessageExpiryDays entry and set it to 0. For me, I had to create a new MessageExpiryDays=0 entry. However it had no effect whatsoever.

I found another similar solution at http://fragments.turtlemeat.com/turn...mail-count.php. It uses the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\... path. I had a MessageExpiryDays=3 entry there already and changed it to 0. Worked like a charm instantly.

Lightbulb Use a GUI

Use TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp

Logon -> Unread Mail and Repair -> Unread Mail Count
