Troubles accessing the internet

I'm having a network problem and I'm trying to determine the cause...

My host computer is receiving errors like:
--------------------------------------------
"Network did not assign a network address to the computer"

'Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed: renewing your ip address'
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm running windows xp pro sp1, w/ wireless B linksys router. My host computer can't access the internet. My laptop seems to be cut off from the host yet still has access to internet.

Could this be ethernet card issue?

I have this card: Realtek Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Russell

Too many variables … Very confusing.
Take it ONE problem at a time:

Update the firmware on your router (available for the manuf. site). Reset settings to Default.

Reinstall all network adapters using the latest drivers.

Try to put it all together (one computer at a time).

you properly have a corrupted winsock
this is how to check
go to start, run, cmd
in the dos
type in ipconfig
what the IP address you get?
if no ip address at all
type in ipconfig /renew
if get the error message An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket
that mean your winsock is corrupted
try to go http://support.microsoft.com and look for this articles 870561
please becareful in the registry
good luck

Good Point!
If that's the case, LSP-Fix may be helpful.

Thanks for your replies....I'm hesitant to go into the registry yet because I'm not clear about the problem. Plus I'm not very experienced in those areas!

Ok

I've checked the ipconfig command...

connection-specific DNS suffix:
Autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.247.139
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway:

When I try IP config/ renew

an error occured while renewing interface LAN: unable to contact your DHCP server

I'm thinking that I may call Linksys tech support?

if the error is unable to contact your DHCP server
you might have to unplug the connection that you have from the router itself
leave it for about 30 sec and then plug it back in restart the computer
if that not working call Linksys
because the IP you have right now is not right
it should be something like 192.168 something before it will work
and your Linksys router have to assigh that IP to your computer
if after you restart it still pickup 169.254 call Linksys because the router need to be reset
PS. your router is your DHCP that assigh the IP for your PC

Good Luck

If you got a spare network card try to replace it, and replace the cat 5 cable as well if you got spare parts around to test it. This will ensure if its bad, or not if the spare parts work. Other things you might try is turning your modem off for 10 minutes, Make sure you disconnect everything, and power off everything when you do this. Replug in the modem, and make sure the tree lights up if this works plug in your router, and fire it up. I suggest resetting the router to default at this point. There is a button on the back you have to push with a paper clip for a few minutes for it to reset. You'll see a red light on the display when it goes off it has reset itself. Once you have done this fire up your box, and when you goto xp check for a internet connection. You can repair your internet within win xp without going to DOS mode and typing ipconfig /renew. You can also repair your ip within your router's webbased utility.

(Tip) Default ip for the router is usually 192.168.1.1 to access the webbased utility, and the pass is usually admin.

Thanks for the help guys... I cleared it up through linksys.

technology... what a bittersweet affair. Yes all these gadgets can save us time in the long run, but it can be so time consuming as well. I wonder who wins in the end?

The problem is your Router, or should I say your Router Configuration
The IP address you posted is an Automatic Private Address that is assign {by Windows} when a NIC be it wire/wireless doesn't receive an IP from the DHCP Server{your router}. OK enough blah blah blah

Here how you correct this problem :
1st: once your Nic[wire/wireless] receives their IP Address[automatic private address] right click on the NIC and click on [status/support] the write down the MAC Address for all the NIC you have for all the computer that are going to be using your router.

2nd: Once that's done you'll need to find that one computer that was assign the right IP address it will say [assign by DHCP: 192.168.X.X] you'll need this computer to access your router [on Netgear routers it's http://192.168.0.1] you'll need to know your router logon name and password the default one came with your router manual unless you've created your own when you setup your router. OK Logon to your router

3rd: click on you basic setting/ wireless setting [depends on the which NIC your using] in your wirless setting make sure you click on SETUP ACCESS LIST or it may say WIRELESS CARD ACCESS LIST and just start adding those MAC Address in, you may even see the MAC address listed now all you'll have to do is just add it to the list click APPLY, also make sure all the Security Encryption(WEP) is the same on NIC's

One the router nows to grant access to those MAC addresses the computer with [Autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.247.139 Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0] will automatically be assign IP Address by DHCP.

Hope this helps you out.
