Installation Problems

I am new here, and desperate for an answer - I got a new computer with only the basics (motherboard, processor, case) I installed all my old components (CD-Rom, floppy, HD) into. I am now trying to install my copy of XP Pro onto it - it goes through the setup process as far as loading everything then it when it gets to the screen that says: to install Windows XP, press enter. Right when it gets there - the computer turns itself off???

HELP!!!!!!!

P.S. I took the HD out and put it back in my old computer and it will load XP just fine, so it isn't a problem with my XP CD-Rom.

YAY - after 24 hours I finally figured it out myself - alot of research and found this on MS website:

Computer Turns Off During Text-Mode Setup If it Is Too Hot
The information in this article applies to:
· Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
· Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q305681
SYMPTOMS
When performing a clean installation of Windows XP, you may experience one of the following symptoms during the text-mode portion of Setup:
· You may receive a "STOP 0x0000007f" error message.
· The Welcome screen may appear, and your computer may then turn off.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the BIOS notifies the system that your computer is too hot to run.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, update to the latest BIOS revision from your hardware manufacturer.

To work around this issue, when you see the option to press F6 during Setup, press F7 instead to select the particular Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to install. This prevents your computer from using the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) HAL, and instead it uses a standard HAL.

Did it solve your problem?

Hi,

Thanks for the info. However were you able to install WinXP? If the problem does not go away you may need to remove the case and place a fan near the cpu.

Tell us what you did next.

Yes I was able to install WinXP - I checked for any revisions for my BIOS - it is up to date. So I did as the article states to work around the issue and I just hit the F7 key right as it stated to hit the F6 key to install RAID drivers. Nothing actually occurred when I hit the F7 key (no new window or options), the install continued as normal and when I got to the welcome screen this time my computer did not shut itself off.

There is already a fan by the the CPU and also one by the HD, so overheating is not a problem. Besides the fact that I had JUST turned the computer on for the first time when I went to load WinXP - it had only been on for maybe a minute or two.

So I got XP loaded and it runs like a charm

Keep It Running Like New

Hi,

To keep WinXP running like new remember to load only programs that you will use. You may want to get an uninstall program and not depend on WinXp Restore. Restore sometimes works and at other times it does not.

You may want to get Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (free) to check that you have install all security patches and hotfixes.

Update WinXP to SP1.

Get Nortons Systemworks and run Win Doctor to check your register for errors.
