Shutdown Problems

Hi,

I am unable to Shut down. Every time i hit shut down my computer simply restarts. I cannot hibernate it either. I had heard that Norton Antivirus created such problems so i uninstalled it but to no avail. I have been unable to correct this problem.

Also, after installing Windows XP SP2 my Shared Documents folder has become unaccessible. I get the error msg saying C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Shared Folder...folder not accessible. I found tht the all users folder does not exist. I hav only one user profile on my computer with the administrator privileges. How can i get my shared folder back??

Thanks & Regards,

Try shutting down the computer by typing shutodown -s -t 1 in the Run window (to keep you from "abusing" the power on/off button) . As for you shared folder, your data is not lost it's just inaccesible, thanks to the incredible reliability of Microsoft's Service Pack 2. I, for one, haven't installed SP2 "just yet" because of the incredible amount of bugs which need to be fixed in it and esspecially the bad interaction with other software (e.g. Norton AntiVirus). I urge you to uninstall SP2. Alltough that might not solve the problems you have now it will surely save you from having to deal with new ones. If uninstalling SP2 doesn't do the trick try repairing you windows installation through the setup recovery console or restoring an older (good) configuration using System Restore. Hope this helps.

Good Luck

hi,

Thanks for your response. I'll try the shutdown thing you suggested. Uninstalling SP2 doesn't help though...and now i can't even use the Remove Windows Components from the Add Remove Programs Dialog Box...way to go Microsoft! I don't get why they can't simply test stuff before releasing it...the shared folder thing is a glaringly obvious fault...anyway thanx for the response..

Regards,
Animesh
