Exclamation Disk read error occured

I recently had to shut down my laptop because it froze up on me. Now after I start it up after the Toshiba logo appears it states this message:

A disk read error occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I have restarted it several times using this. It will not to to safe mode. Any help would be appreiated. I have several documents on my laptop that i would like to save or atleast try to before rebooting the system

Thanks

I had the same error the other night .. you could try and replace the MBR on the windows xp recovery console but that didnt work for me unfortunately

I had to format my hdd and do a fresh install you could try and boot up on another HDD and check to see if the data is still intact then transfere the important files and format.

Hope this helped if you need more information im willing to help

Ok, what I think you need to do is boot to DOS them type in either 'FIXBOOT' or 'BOOTFIX', can't remember which. The corrupted BOOT INI file will then be repaired. Good luck.

A bit more explanation I think your laptop has a corrupt BOOT INI file. This can be repaired by using a recovery disc, you could try a WIN98 startup floppy, (not sure if it will work though) Anyway, you use this to boot the Laptop into dos and at the C/WINNT Prompt Type BOOTFIXor FIXBOOT, can't remeber which way round.
