You probably have too many startup programs.
Look here.

Start/Run/msconfig

Sevices Tab/Check box called Hide all Microsoft Services.
What ever is left are 3rd party services that start when the computer starts.

Startup Tab/Whateve ia here also starts EVERY time the computer starts.

My guess is that you have TOO many items under Startup Tab; or an application that is not starting correctly.

Uncheck everything under Startup and reboot a few times and see how it boots.

If you have Norton Internet Security, this program alone can take a minute or more.

Try using BootVis:
to see what might be causing the slowdown - this will not fix your problem, but it may help you to see what the problem is in the first place.

Do you have Norton AV2003 and/or the Norton FireWall installed? -I heard from people who have a similar prolem whereby the desktop and the icons appear, but they cannot doing anything with their PC for about 2 mins, whilst Norton kicks in a sorts itself out.

Also check on this page which may offer a solution to your problem (if you ARE using Norton that is):

If you are not on a company network do this

Start
Run
msconfig

Disable the following services

Background intelligent transfer service (causes a lot of wait time)
Computer Browser (causes icons to come up slow)
Server
Messenger
Task Scheduler
Internet connection firewall (if you dont use it)
Performance logs and alerts (if you dont use them)
Uninterruptible Power Supply (if you dont use)
and Windows Updates (just do it manually)

This should speed you up by 90 %

If it is just XP installed and it still takes 2 minutes to boot it is a hardware/driver problem.

What are your hardware specs?
