sp1 from cd

hey i installed windows xp from a cd w/o sp1, but now we have a cd with sp1 included, but i don't want to format and reinstall windows! so how can i install sp1 from this cd w/o having to download it? i looked at this page: http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_...stallation.htm and i did everything but the last step- i found the files on the cd and replaced my current files with them, and i copied sp1.cab to the servicepackfiles and driver cache folders, and i copied sp1.cat to the folder it says its located in, and i replaced the drvindex.inf and layout.inf files with the ones from the cd, and updated the regisry to include the %SystemRoot%\Servicepackfiles folder. Then, i rebooted. still nothing- still says my version of windows is 5.1 (Build 2600.xpclient.010817-1148).... and i can't install .net studio express... is there anything else i need to do to get it to recognize sp1? thanks...

If you insert the CD and run setup from a later version of XP, it will detect the earlier version and ask if you want to do a completely new installation or just update your existing installation.

The latter option doesn't format anything and retains your original configuration/files too.

(Always backup important stuff first though - you never know...)

If you want to stick with SP1, then I would suggest downloading the network install package from the Microsoft website.

Unless you have any specific reason not to, I would recommend ordering a free CD with Service Pack 2 from Microsoft. You don't have to pay anything. Just give them your name and address and they'll send a CD to you within about 2-4 weeks. Using that CD, you can apply SP2 without having to reinstall Windows.
