If you have a high speed internet connection (cable or DSL), the easiest way to network is to buy a router, about $60 or $70 at Wal Mart, probably cheaper if you shop around on the net. Both computers are plugged into it and can connect to the internet independently of each other.

The cheapest way is probably to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), a feature of Windows which lets you set up one computer to provide the connection through the modem that both computers use. It's not the easiest thing to set up but probably the best solution if you have a dialup connection. The computer providing the connection has to be running in order for the other computer to get online.

Oh yeah..I'm a woman, too, and people pay me quite a bit to fix their computers. I get a lot of return business so they must be happy with the work I do. The ability to learn really isn't gender specific.
