UNC path doesn't work on Microsoft VPN

I cannot connect to a server using the UNC path when connected via Microsoft VPN.
"\\servername\share"
I can ping the system, and Outlook e-mail works fine.
I have also tried with server IP address "\\xxxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx\share"

Any clues?
