Red face how can you manually change open/closed folder icons

Ok, I know how to change the icon for all open and closed folders by adding/modifying the appropriate registry keys. The problem is this will affect all the folder icons in explorer, and i only want to change just a certain one.

So you can do this by right-clicking on the folder in explorer and choosing customize and change icon. The only problem is, it shows that same custom icon for the folder in explorer regardless of whether it's opened or closed. How can i manually change both the open and closed icon for the folder?
