XP folders & apps wont open, right click menu shows 2 / 3 options - i cant do nething

Hi all,

Right my XP Pro is going hay wire. It starts up fine and all looks normal, however its going mad. I cant open folders, start up applications or anything. IE will start however. I cant get into my computer, i double click on the icon for it and the egg timer comes up for a split second and then goes and nothing happens. Control pannel is the same. Nearly every application i try and run gives me the same problem. Every now and again i manage to get a small folder to open eg. the pics folder on my desktop sometimes opens, however when it does there is no file, edit, view etc menu and no address bar or anything. I can see the contents of the folder but whenn i try to open a file i just here a beep and nothing happens. Its all just screwed right up. Also most of the time my right click menu is seriously messed up. If i right click on a file, folder or anything else maybe only 2 or 3 of the right click menu options are displayed. And if the Open option is lucky enough to be displayed and i click on it, nothing still happens. Other times more options may be displayed, maybe 4 or 5, and sometimes just sometimes the whole menu is displayed.

I dont know what to do, it sounds like a virus but i cant detect one, ive done virus scans still with no luck.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction of finding a solution as i really really need help with this.

have a look at this thread, lots of help here, did you turn off System Restore, antivirus programes can't scan restore points, windows protects them and viruses are in these restore points.
