XP Search not working, IE not working properly

I'm running XP Pro on a Dell Dimension 4500. Around the time I installed Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 9.0.3, my kids found that they could no longer log in to Toontown, a Disney game site that we subscribe to. The desktop shortcut stopped working - a blank page loaded. I could navigate to www.toontown.com and that page would load, but when we clicked on the PLAY button there, nothing happened. I had a chat session with toontown support wherein we deleted the ActiveX control, cleared my cookies, and "unloaded" Symantec. None of that was any help and in clicking the PLAY button again I loaded a blank page & lost the chat session. Now I can't even get the toontown.com page to load. I next noticed that www.disney.go.com - which is not a subscription site - would not load in IE, when it would before. Toontown ONLY works with IE. I also have Firefox & it is working fine. Toontown was working fine for several months. I have a VPN connection.

Next, I found that the Yahoo homepage would load fine, but if I do a search, I get an error message that says that my browser sumbitted a request that the server could not recognize. MSN & Google searches seem to work fine.

I did some research on how to repair IE. I ran sfc /scannow. That didn't help. The second method I found involved searching for ie.inf, but I found that my Search function does not work. I click START, SEARCH and it opens, but there is no text, no search box, only the scratching dog. Rebooted to no avail.

I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

I managed to get the search function working by running the following commands:
regsvr32 wshom.ocx
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
I could not access System Restore before I did this, either. I ran system restore, but it did not fix my IE problems.

in the same boat

Hi,

just wondering if you had any joy in fixing your IE? Looks like i've got exactly the same issues caused by Norton AV...

It crashed few months ago and since then PC has been mis-behaving. Search didn't work (but your workaround fixed it!), IE does not display all pages, even windowsupdate.microsoft.com. So must be the same problem.

I hope your still checking this thread, but this worked for me and I know how annoying this bug is!

If you go to RUN in the start menu, then type in the following commands:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wshom.ocx

Each should prompt a confirmation box saying it has been successful. This should fix your problems!

Toontown

Did anyone manage to get toontown up and running again. My son has been playing on it for 3 months now with no problems. All of a sudden we could no longer access the game. The shortcut stopped working and the only way in was through the disney website. But once prompted to enter his password he just kept being prompted to enter it over and over again. We have now had to do a system restore but we still cant access it. We have not downloaded or installed any new software since we loaded toontown, so if anyoneknow what I should do please reply.

Toontown stopped working

Just thought I would let you know that some linksys units stop letting Toontown through the firewall after a while. I had to pay an IT expert to come over and after he unplugged the unit and plugged the PC direct into broadband Toontown was up and running again. You need to go into the settings on the unit and ask it to allow Toontown at all times. I hope this of help to anyone else who may be experiencing problems.

Thanks for the suggestion, resolved my problem, both for explorer and internet explorer.
Problem arose as I tried using Kaspersky Lab virus checker and then had to unistall it, which is when Search stopped working.
Thanks

Unhappy Toontown

I had the same problem with Toontown. Never did get back in and the toontown people didn't really care. Guess they have all the money they need.
There was nothing wrong with my computer either, as it has been over a year ago since we couldn't access Toontown and I have not had any problems with any other websites.

Thanks for sharing this! I was having the same situation when I installed the Kaspersky antivirus and many error show up. So i uninstalled the kaspersky, but now my SEARCH, IE, Yahoo all messed up! When I call up my vendor Fujitsu PC, they told me to reinstall WINDOW! What a clever solution suggested. Anyway, I was about to submit to that suggestion when I did the last attemp to fix the issue without having to go through the hassle of backup all my datat and reinstall all my other applications. Thank god to have found this discussion this morning. It works! Now all my issue with that BLANK display are gone, and whenI click START, SEARCH and it opens, now besides the scratching dog, the search box and text are back !!!! Thanks again! Cheng Lam from Singapore (IMF 2006 meeting Host!!!!)

My problem started when i decided to ditch Norton for Avast anti virus too! I would mind finding out why all this happened tho out of interest, if any one knows... Hope its not Avast, i much prefer it Norton

Thank you thank you
i run into the same problems today after uninstalling McAfee antivirus software. I called their customer support no clue what happened and than by accident found this. For me Search stopped working and any page with jscript in it stopped working. I installed and unistalled java support in ie and did the same with ie7 nothing worked. It looks as if all these antivirus software programs modify or hook or do something with these 3 dll's and later forget to reregister them work after uninstall. Really bad programming and qa'ing which did not catch it. Anyway i am happy was ready to reinstall tons of software from scratch

antivirus uninstall adventures

there is more to this problem besides jscript javascript also vbscript processing got broken and still some pages would show
"done but with errors on page" when loaded
to fix it all there is ms download

"Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000
Brief Description
This download installs Microsoft® Windows® Script containing Visual Basic® Script Edition (VBScript.) Version 5.6, JScript® Version 5.6, Windows Script Components, Windows Script Host 5.6, and Windows Script Runtime Version 5.6."

after running this one everything started to work fine
this install takes care of all dll's used and needed by scripting on web pages

mcafee norton and other antivirus uninstall program issues

Thank you very much for the suggestion. The solution worked for me.
------
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wshom.ocx
------
I installed McAfee Total protection package on a Windows Vista basic laptop, then all webpages that use javascript stopped working. I went to the command line and typed in the three above lines (received an error on the first two lines and the third line worked). Closed all my browser windows, started a new browser window and now my pages with javascript work!!!!
Thanks again, and a comment to all those Virus Protection software makers.... start writing better code.
