There's not enough information here to make an accurate guess at what's going on Chris.

You say the monitor didn't come on. Is it powered directly from the computer or a separate electrical supply? If it gets its power from the compter (a socket in the back), try unplugging the monitor completely and rebooting. (I know you can't see anything but does the computer seem to boot ok?) Or try a friend's monitor on your system. (One that plugs into the wall, not the computer, and see what happens.)

I would also suggest getting your Power Supply Unit tested/replaced.

A dying PSU will cause all sorts of intermitent problems.

Yep... that smells like a blown power supply. I had that happen to my girlfriend's computer. All the fan's would turn and I could hear the hard drive and CD-ROM drive spin up, but nothing else. I switched out the power supply and all was fine and dandy.

Go to your local computer store and see if they have any replacement power supplies. They're relatively cheap and easy to install. PM me or post back if you need more instructions on how to go about doing this. (Trust me, you'll want to do it yourself instead of shelling out another $50-100 on labour).
