Unhappy chkdsk

I'm running WinXP Home Service Pack 1.
Partitions are NTFS.
About once a week chkdsk runs unexpectedly, occasionally finding corrupted files.
Error checking doesn't find anything strange.
I recently installed a new HD, and removed the old one. I formatted new partitions and reinstalled the OS.
The problem persists!
Any thoughts?
Possibly a shutdown issue? Or does CHKDSK run automatically?
There's nothing else strange about the machine that I notice.
Thanks,
Ted Lewis
