Exclamation no active mixer devices available..help

Can someone please help.... I was having problems with my Windows Home OS so I installed Windows Xp Pro...Now I can't get the volume to work....When I try under Volume Control...it says...There are no active mixer devices available. I'm a novice at this really and don't know how to correct the problem. I have a sony Vaio computer...and I'm not even sure what sound card is installed in order to get a new driver.....

To try the easiest thing first, try reinstalling the sound card drivers.

To do that, right click on My Computer, left click on Properties then on the Hardware tab then on the Device Manager button.

Double click on Sound, Video and Game Controllers to expand the category, then double click on the sound card listed. If you're not sure which one that is, it'll be the one that has a Driver tab on the window that opens when you double click it.

Click on the Driver tab and then on the Update Driver button. Step through the wizard and see if it can get the drivers straightened out.

If that doesn't work, download, install and run either Everest Home Edition or Belarc Advisor. Either will inventory your computer and give you lots of information...including the make/model of sound card installed. With that information, you can do a search on the net for drivers.

Or post the make and model of the sound card back here for help with finding drivers.

I've got the same thing:

OK here is the deal - win xp with sp2 on a P4 (865GM2 MSI motherboard)

Device manager lists the audio device and drivers and says its working properly. There are no conflicts. However, Volume control says there is no audio device and settings are greyed out. Drivers in use c-media 5.12.1.44

Up until a recent windows update, sound was working. The update installed the latest hardware driver for AC97 audio contoller (which it identified as vynl AC97).

We have removed the files in system32/ and system32/drivers that relate to the vynl update and those for c-media and replaced them with the original working c-media drivers (as listed above).

we have checked the services are running for windows audio and dependants.
AC97 is enabled in the bios, which has also been reset along with the cmos.

to rule out hardware we have installed and subequently removed a SB card - the exact same fault is present.

anyone know a fix?

Uninstall the sound card from within Device Manager and reboot.

Windows should find new hardware upon restart and reinstall the drivers.

OK we got it fixed. The plug and play software emulator had was missing. Fixed by searching for machine.inf then copy to temp directory. remove at about line 20 " ExcludeFromSelect=* "

goto control panel, add new hardware, next (let it seach), yes hardware is connected, next, scroll to bottom, add new hardware device, next, install from list, next, select system devices, next, select have disk, point to amended copy of machine.inf in temp directory, scroll to "plug and play software device emulator" in right hand column, next and complete install.

No Active Mixer Devices Available

The other responses have not answered your problem Shmoos5. I had the same problem as you, and found a solution on a different forum which worked for me, so it might work for you:
Try re-enabling the audio service. It may be turned off.
Go to Control Panel/administrative tools/services set it to automatic and then click the start button.
