Norton Installation, Uninstallation, Reinstallation Failure on XP

Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 06:58:11 -0800

Hi Folks, I'm trying to install Norton Internet Security on my freshly reformatted hardrive, this is what I did:

• I disabled Windows XP firewall.
• I uninstalled Kaspersky Antivirus using XP’s Uninstall feature.
• I performed an online virus scan using Norton Internet Security 2005, I was clean.
• I entered the key code successfully, but was unsuccessful trying to Update NIS. I got to the step with the Configuration Wizard and it stopped operating.

I received taskbar notifications that NIC was unable to complete a full scan on my computer. I followed links to instructions to try uninstalling, and reinstall NIS again. NIS began sending notifications about Beagle & Mydoom being a potential threat against my computer that NIS couldn’t protect me from. I ran 2 different virus scans and my computer is clean.

On my second attempt I turned off SpySweeper, SpywareBlaster, Ad-ware and SpyBot. Then I used %TEMP% to track down all Symantec files associated w/ the initial installation, while doing this I located Kaspersky files that survived the XP Uninstall and deleted those too, the attempt to reinstall NIS failed.

This is what I did:
• Remove all files via %TEMP%
• I closed startup window programs via Start, Run, Msconfig, Okay, and changed preferences as instructed.
• Performed an online virus scan on my computer Via NIS, and my computer was clean.
• Rebooted the computer.
• Then, tried to reinstall the program. The computer crashed.

I repeated the processes above, plus the following instructions from Symantec:
• Did a search for hidden (Symantec) files and found 47 instances that refuse to be deleted “Can not delete…source is not available” Could these be system restoration files? I’ve tried a system restoration too.
• I’ve changed the ActiveX settings to accept NIS’s ActiveX download,
• Deleted HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SYMANTEC
• Deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec.

Where is the configuration problem????

Occasionally, before the system crashes a blue screen w/ white lettering regarding errors darts across the screen in about 2.3 seconds. Does anyone know what this is, or how I can access it to read what it says? My Foxfire browser also encountering errors and reporting to MSN without giving me useful information. I’m wiped out! And fading Fast. Can anyone help?

You appear to have done everything to clean your machine, but did you turn off System Restore before running all your scans. System Retore is protected by Windows and cannot be scanned,so if anything on your machine it just comes back as soon as you boot. Turn off System Restore and run your scans again, try on of the free online virus scans such as Panda, if this does not work try the scans in safe mode.
