WinXP Virus: Can't use Windows Update

Hi

Right got a virus through MSN that began by running a proc called shootbillgates.exe

It basically prevented me from removing it by hiding itself + removing the options tab in the tools drop down menu in explorer + disabling task manager + windows update as well as other things.

Managed to run some Virus software and remove the bloody thing but its left me unabel to access the options menu as well as windows update.

The options option from the tool menu of explorer has just gone.

I cannot update cause everytime it does it says that it has been disabled by the system administrator. Despie the fact I am using the administrator account.

Please help me get my system back to normal. Who knows what else it has done!

I had a similar problem that disabled all Microsoft software, but left everything else running fine.

Try to restore your system to a time prior to contracting the virus via System Restore.

I wish I could but I've disabled system restore...basically I need to regain control over the option that removes the 'folder options' from both the contrl panel and the Tools menu in explorer. It's basically not allowing me to display hidden files or folders.

It has also disabled Windows Upgrade.

The thing is I went and setup another administrator profile which allowed me to use windows update but it does not rectify the folder options problem....

There must be some profile option that has been disabled or rather the default has been overrided

Right I've managed to get Windows Update to work by going into the registry and manually turning it on despite the fact that I cannot find any DWORD keys that had turned it off.

I still NEED to get the folder options back and the icon in the control panel would be nice.

I tried adding the icon to explorer's taskbar but it won'y activate when I click on it so somewhere is something telling Windows not to let me access it!

Where the hell could it be!!! Argh!!

Try Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer and Create (or find) a DWORD Value "NoFolderOptions" and set its Value to '0'

u can also try the repair option from u windows xp cd if u running pro I have no idea about home version

Looks like you might have a VIRUS in if on B/B try using one of these online scanners.

Warning be very carefull how you use these make sure and read how to use them as some of your programs might not work after these.
