Are you trying to defragment or check partition F:?
Do you have hard drive partitions from C to F?
Defragment and CHKDSK are programs, which are independent of each other.
CHKDSK can check all drives during a windows session BUT NOT DRIVE C: for errors. Drive C: must be checked after reboot to allow CHKDSK access to the entire drive (which it can not whilst Windows is running).
So, if you want to check (and fix any errors found) a drive other than C: (F: for example), you can use Start -> Run and type "CHKDSK F: /f" (without quotes), which means:
CHECK DISK F: and FIX errors if found
You can change F: for another drive letter. If you wish to check drive C:, you can use the above, but you must choose that option in the DOS window and reboot to allow the program to work. This is only true of drive C:.
On the other hand, Defragmentation programs will work during windows sessions on all drives.
For the standard defragment program, open "My Computer", right-click on the drive letter and from the "tools" tab, choose defragment.
CHKDSK check the drive for erors whereas Defragment will arrange the fragmented files on a drive for quicker access.
