windows xp upgrade

Long Version:

I just recently bought an upgrade to windows XP from Best Buy. I have bought several new components (motherboard, ram, CPU (which I'll list). Before I open the XP box to install, I want to make sure a clean install will work. My current computer is a dell dimensions 4100.

I've read in several places that I'll need an orignal windows Me disk and not just the reinstallation disk. When I bought the computer I was never given an original disk.

I have a ton of junk on my computer and want to do a clean install. I'm sure this question has been asked before so if someone can point me in the right direction that would be great. thanks

Short Version:

I want to clean install windows XP upgrade, but have no original windows me disk, just the reinstallation disk. Will there be any problems? And what are my options?

Motherboard: Soyo KT600 dragon plus 2.0
CPU: AMD 2500+
RAM: 512 MB (can’t remember name)

You can do a clean install from your XP CDRom. It is not necessary to have your ME CD.

Boot from the CD and, from the install menu, you can erase and format the C: drive in preparation for the installation.

Have your driver cd's handy during installation as XP will ask for them if necessary.

After installation, you can install any other drivers which windows didn't ask for.

Thanks for the response.

I am assuming the drivers are for the new/old hardware, will I need others drivers?

XP has many drivers built in, so it may or may not ask you to insert driver disks for certain pieces of hardware during the installation. The disk that came with your motherboard should be used after installation, but things like GFX Cards etc may necessitate insertion of the driver disk during installation.

Not having the appropriate cd may not stop the installation and you can update the driver later e.g. when I did the same thing, I had to install the monitor driver following installation, as XP used a generic driver.
