Not Responding

I have recently just built a new system with xp pro and every now and again when i open a application it just does nothing when i close it,it will say not responding at the top of the page and will clear the screen for about 5 sec's and the taskbar and desktop will come back on.this also happens when i put a disc into the cd-rom and try to explore the disc.i am absolutely puzzled as to why this is happening can anybody help.

Thanks.

Are you leaving enough time for operations to be completed?

If you have a virus scanner disable it and try again. See if it improves. Also some of Xp's backgroud services may be interfering. Disabling any services that you dont use could help your problem.
